Event was held in Ashgabat to mark the 79th anniversary of the United Nations

On October 25, 2024, an event was held in the UN building in Ashgabat to mark the 79th anniversary of the entry into force of the Charter of the United Nations.

The event was attended by heads and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, as well as leadership and staff members of the UN agencies in Ashgabat.

The event centered on the significant role of the UN as a respected and legitimate universal international forum, guarantor of preserving and maintaining peace and the balance of interests in the international arena. 

In his speech, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov noted the effectiveness and key vectors of Turkmenistan’s constructive cooperation with the UN. 

It was emphasized that upon the initiative of Turkmenistan, the UN General Assembly adopted 27 resolutions encompassing such areas as supporting regional security, strengthening peace, ensuring sustainable development, overcoming challenges related to climate change and others.

In particular, it was noted that on October 24, during the 25th plenary meeting of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, the resolution “Zone of Peace, Trust and Cooperation of Central Asia”, initiated by Turkmenistan was unanimously adopted and was co-sponsored by 37 UN member states, including all neighbors of Turkmenistan, that is Central Asian states, as well as Azerbaijan, Iran and Afghanistan.

During the event, Turkmenistan’s commitment to further contribute to the attainment of UN humane goals was reaffirmed.

Minister of Foreign Affairs informed about the preparations to the next meeting of the Strategic Advisory Council “Turkmenistan-United Nations”, established with the support of the esteemed President of Turkmenistan, during which concrete steps on collaboration with the UN for the upcoming period will be discussed.
