From 10 to 12 June 2026, a Turkmen delegation led by the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan, Ata Serdarov, paid a working visit to Japan.

During the visit, meetings were held with Vice President of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan Taro Aso, Secretary-General of the Liberal Democratic Party Shunichi Suzuki, Chairman of the Japan-Turkmenistan Parliamentary Friendship Group Shinpei Matsushita, as well as Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Arfiya Eri.

During the talks, the parties discussed the current state and future prospects of bilateral cooperation between Turkmenistan and Japan.

It was noted that Turkmen-Japanese relations have been steadily developing across a wide range of areas owing to the consistent political dialogue at the highest level. In this context, particular emphasis was placed on the significance of the high-level meetings held in Tokyo in 2025, which provided additional impetus to the further strengthening of bilateral cooperation.

Special attention was paid to the development of interparliamentary ties. The parties expressed satisfaction with the active work of the friendship groups established between the legislative bodies of the two countries, which contribute significantly to expanding cooperation in the legislative, cultural, humanitarian, scientific and educational spheres, as well as in other areas.

The meetings also included an exchange of views on expanding cooperation between the political parties of the two countries. In this regard, the expediency of establishing direct cooperation between the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan and the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, as well as creating an appropriate mechanism for party-to-party interaction, was noted.

The parties considered specific proposals aimed at further strengthening interparliamentary cooperation, including the organization of the “Central Asia + Japan” Dialogue Parliamentary Forum in Ashgabat in 2027, the development of cooperation among women parliamentarians, and the expansion of trade and economic ties.

It was emphasized that economic cooperation, including the implementation of joint projects in the oil and gas and chemical industries, remains one of the key areas of Turkmen-Japanese partnership.

Following the meetings, the parties reaffirmed their mutual interest in the further development and deepening of multifaceted cooperation between Turkmenistan and Japan.
